Ch. 2 · Pedestrian Conduct

Practice questions on pedestrian rules: sidewalks, crosswalks, railroad crossings, and walking at night. AI explanations show the “why” behind every rule.

Key topics

Mobility scooters and pedestrian-equivalent devices. Vehicles meeting specific standards (length ≤120 cm, speed ≤6 km/h) follow pedestrian rules; memorize the 6 km/h limit and who qualifies (people pushing bicycles, children's tricycles, remotely operated small vehicles). Where pedestrians walk. Use sidewalks when present; on roads without sidewalks, walk on the right edge (left only when right-side walking would be more dangerous). Crossing rules. Use nearby crosswalks or signalized intersections; never start crossing on a flashing green signal. Railroad crossing safety. Always stop and check both directions before crossing; never enter when the warning bell rings or gate is lowering, even partially. Night and rainy-day visibility. Wear bright colors and attach reflective materials to shoes, bags, and clothing; at night, drivers cannot see pedestrians as easily as pedestrians see headlights.

Common pitfalls

Flashing green ≠ yellow. A flashing green pedestrian signal means do not start crossing (not "proceed with caution"). Right-edge rule exceptions. Pedestrians walk on the right edge unless doing so requires repeated dangerous crossings. 6 km/h vs. 8 km/h. Mobility scooters must not exceed 6 km/h, not 8 km/h. Railroad crossing assumptions. No warning bell does not mean safe—always stop and check; a train from one direction does not mean it's clear.

  1. Q1A person operating a mobility scooter is subject to the same traffic rules as a pedestrian.[True / False · Easy]

    Answer: ✓ True

Explanation: At the beginning of Chapter 2, Section 1 of the Rules of the Road, it states "The following people are subject to the same traffic rules as pedestrians," and the first category listed is "people operating mobility scooters." Therefore, people operating mobility scooters are subject to the same traffic rules as pedestrians.

  8. Q8Which of the following is the correct standard for walking-type motorized vehicles?[Multiple choice · Medium]
    • A.Length not exceeding 120 centimeters, width not exceeding 60 centimeters
    • B.Length not exceeding 190 centimeters, width not exceeding 60 centimeters
    • C.Length not exceeding 190 centimeters, width not exceeding 70 centimeters
    • D.Length not exceeding 120 centimeters, width not exceeding 70 centimeters

Answer: B: Length not exceeding 190 centimeters, width not exceeding 60 centimeters

Explanation: Standard (1) for walking-type vehicles specifies that "the length must not exceed 190 centimeters and the width must not exceed 60 centimeters." Unlike many other small vehicles that are 120 centimeters × 70 centimeters, this vehicle type is characterized by being longer in length and narrower in width.

  9. Q9Which of the following is an incorrect standard for the emergency stop device of a remotely operated small vehicle?[Multiple choice · Hard]
    • A.The push button must be limited to one that can be easily operated from the front and rear of the vehicle body
    • B.The push button must be easily identifiable due to a large difference in brightness or other factors between the push button and the surrounding area
    • C.It must immediately stop the motor when activated
    • D.The push button must be limited to one that can be easily operated from the side of the vehicle body

Answer: D: The push button must be limited to one that can be easily operated from the side of the vehicle body

Explanation: The standard for the emergency stop device of remotely operated small vehicles specifies "a push button (limited to one that can be easily operated from the front and rear of the vehicle body)." There is no mention of operation from the side, and operation from the front and rear is required. Therefore, option 4 is incorrect.

  110. Q110Which of the following statements about remotely operated small vehicles is incorrect?[Multiple choice · Hard]
    • A.Before operating on a road, confirm that a mark is displayed in a visible location
    • B.Notify the Public Safety Commission one week before starting operation
    • C.In principle, the same rules as vehicles apply
    • D.The remote control device must be operated reliably

Answer: C: In principle, the same rules as vehicles apply

Explanation: Remotely operated small vehicles (e.g. delivery robots that travel along roads without a human aboard) follow pedestrian rules in principle (Rules of the Road Ch.2 §11 2(1)). Option 3 says "the same rules as vehicles" — but they follow pedestrian rules, so option 3 is the wrong statement (the "incorrect" one the question asks for). The trap is intuitively treating them like vehicles because they are machines.

  113. Q113A flashing green pedestrian signal has the same meaning as a yellow signal, so there is no problem starting to cross after it begins flashing.[True / False · Medium]

    Answer: ✕ False

    Answer: ✕ False

Explanation: According to the Rules of the Road, on a road with no sidewalk or sufficiently wide roadside strip, pedestrians must in principle walk on the right edge of the road. However, as an exception, if walking on the right edge would result in repeated crossings and be more dangerous, pedestrians may walk on the left edge.
