Ch. 8 · Motorcycles
Practice questions for the motorcycle and moped license tests — riding posture, braking technique, and automatic-transmission motorcycles.
Key topics
Proper riding posture and grip: Place the arch of your foot on the footrest, grip the tank with both knees, keep your back straight, lower your wrists, and hold the handlebars lightly as if pushing forward—do not raise wrists or grip tightly. Braking technique: Apply front and rear brakes simultaneously with the body vertical; on dry surfaces apply the front brake somewhat strongly, on slippery surfaces apply the rear brake somewhat strongly. Engine braking is more effective in lower gears. Two-up riding restrictions: You must have held the applicable license for at least one year and be at least 20 years old; on expressways you need three years of license history. Moped two-stage right turns: Standard mopeds must use the two-stage right turn method at intersections with three or more traffic lanes controlled by traffic lights—signal 30 meters before the intersection.
Common pitfalls
License duration vs. vehicle class: Holding a large motorcycle license for six months does not let you ride two-up on a regular motorcycle if you have not held that specific license for one year. Front vs. rear brake priority: On dry roads the front brake is applied somewhat strongly; on slippery roads the rear brake is applied somewhat strongly—students often reverse this. Pedestrian status when pushing: You are treated as a pedestrian only if the engine is off and the motorcycle has no sidecar attached.

Q10A 21-year-old who has held a large motorcycle license for 2 years but has held a regular motorcycle license for 4 years can ride a large motorcycle two-up on an expressway.[True / False · Hard]
Answer: ✓ True
Explanation: Under Rules of the Road Ch.8 and Road Traffic Act §71-4, people under 20 or who have held a large motorcycle license for less than 3 years cannot carry a passenger on an expressway. However, those who are 20+ AND have held a regular motorcycle license for 3+ years can ride two-up on a large motorcycle as an exception. The person in the question (21 years old, 2 years on large licence, 4 years on regular licence) meets that exception, so two-up riding is allowed.

The correct condition is "when RPM is low," not "when high," so this question statement is incorrect. This is a trick question that substitutes numbers or conditions.

Q61I am confident in my physical fitness and have taken technical training, so even though this is my first time riding a motorcycle, I decided to start by choosing and riding a large displacement model.[True / False · Medium]
Answer: ✕ False
Explanation: The Rules of the Road specify that it is dangerous to ride a large displacement motorcycle immediately, even if you are confident in your physical fitness. You are required to start with a small displacement model and move to larger models as your skill level increases.

Q62Although only 10 months have passed since obtaining my large motorcycle license, I have held my regular motorcycle license for 2 years, so I can ride a large motorcycle with a passenger.[True / False · Medium]
Answer: ✓ True
Explanation: The Rules of the Road specify that even if less than one year has passed since receiving a large motorcycle license, you can ride with a passenger if one year has passed since receiving a regular motorcycle license. In this case, since you have held the regular motorcycle license for 2 years, riding with a passenger is permitted.

Q63When turning right at an intersection, a general moped must always make a right turn using the two-stage right turn method.[True / False · Medium]
Answer: ✕ False
Explanation: The Rules of the Road specify that general mopeds must use the two-stage right turn method when there is a specific sign or at signalized intersections with three or more traffic lanes, but at intersections where there is a "small right turn method" sign or at other intersections, they must make a small right turn. There are exceptions where small right turns are permitted.

Q64The traffic light ahead was about to turn red, so I needed to brake quickly and applied only the front brake hard and suddenly to stop.[True / False · Medium]
Answer: ✕ False
Explanation: The Rules of the Road specify that applying the brake suddenly can cause the wheels to stop rotating and lead to skidding, so you should apply the brake in multiple increments. Additionally, you are required to apply both front and rear brakes simultaneously, and applying only the front brake hard and suddenly is dangerous.

Source: Ch. 8 · Section (第4節 ブレーキの掛け方 2 ブレーキを掛けるときの注意) · Rules of the Road, Ch.8 §4 (Braking technique) — Use both front and rear brakes together with gradual increasing pressure. Avoid sudden braking, especially on curves, wet surfaces, or loose gravel. Engine braking by downshifting reduces brake wear and improves control.
Q65When riding an automatic transmission motorcycle at low speed, releasing the throttle completely may cause the engine power to stop transmitting to the wheels and result in loss of stability, so caution is required.[True / False · Medium]
Answer: ✓ True
Explanation: The Rules of the Road state that when an automatic transmission motorcycle uses a continuously variable transmission, the engine power is transmitted less effectively to the wheels at low engine speeds, and releasing the throttle completely during low-speed riding may stop the transmission of engine power to the wheels, resulting in loss of stability.
Driving school curriculum: Stage 1 – Topic 14: Driving an automatic-transmission vehicle
Source: Ch. 8 · Section (第5節 オートマチック二輪車の運転 3 低速で走行するとき) · Rules of the Road, Ch.8 §5 (Riding automatic motorcycles) — Automatic motorcycles have no clutch; engine braking is weaker than on geared bikes, so allow extra braking distance. At low speeds, balance is harder — keep speed up enough to remain stable.
Q66I wanted to ride on the sidewalk, so I stopped the motor of my pedal-equipped moped and rode using the pedals. In this case, I am treated as a pedestrian.[True / False · Medium]
Answer: ✕ False
Explanation: The Rules of the Road state that even when riding a pedal-equipped moped using the pedals without operating the motor, it is still treated as operating a motor vehicle or general moped. Therefore, you are not treated as a pedestrian.
