Written-test study material

Ch. 7 · Expressway

Entering, driving, speed limits, and breakdown handling on Japanese expressways. Key points that frequently appear on the full-license written test.

Key topics

Pre-entry inspections: Check fuel, tire pressure (must be normal, not reduced), cargo security, engine oil level, radiator cap, and carry a breakdown warning device. Acceleration and deceleration lanes: Use acceleration lanes to match the speed of main lane traffic before merging; use deceleration lanes when exiting. Never skip the acceleration lane. Following distance: At 100 km/h on dry roads with new tires, maintain approximately 100 meters (not 50); increase this distance significantly when roads are wet or tires are worn. Prohibited actions on the main lane: No U-turns, reversing, crossing median strips, or driving on shoulders or roadside strips. Stopping and parking are only allowed at designated parking areas or for toll payment. Breakdown procedures: Place warning triangle behind (not in front of) your vehicle, then evacuate outside the guardrail immediately.

Common pitfalls

Tire pressure confusion: Do NOT reduce tire pressure before expressway driving—maintain normal pressure. Following distance at 100 km/h: The required distance is about 100 meters, not 50 meters; students often halve the correct value. Warning triangle placement: Place it behind your vehicle, not in front.

    Answer: ✓ True

Explanation: Rules of the Road Chapter 7, Section 2, 3(4) clearly prohibits these actions: "On the main lane, you must not make U-turns, reverse, or cross the median strip." Because the main lane is for high-speed travel, these actions are strictly forbidden as they are extremely dangerous.

    Answer: ✓ True

Explanation: Rules of the Road Chapter 7, Section 2, 4(4) states, "Remaining in a vehicle that has become unable to operate on an expressway is extremely dangerous, as there is a high risk of rear-end collisions with following vehicles. After taking necessary safety measures, do not remain in the vehicle; evacuate to a safe location such as outside the guardrail."

    • A.About 1.5 times
    • B.About 2 times
    • C.About 3 times
    • D.About 4 times

    Answer: B: About 2 times

Explanation: Rules of the Road Chapter 7, Section 2, 2(4) specifies, "When the road surface is wet and tires are worn, a following distance of about twice this amount may be necessary." About twice the following distance required on a dry road surface with new tires is needed.

  19. Q19Which precaution is correct when exiting from the main lane of an expressway?[Multiple choice · Medium]
    • A.If there is a deceleration lane, rely on your sense of speed to slow down
    • B.If there is a deceleration lane, check your speedometer while slowing down
    • C.Do not use the deceleration lane and slow down on the main lane
    • D.Do not slow down in the deceleration lane and proceed to the exit

Answer: B: If there is a deceleration lane, check your speedometer while slowing down

Explanation: Rules of the Road Chapter 7, Section 2, 5(2) clearly states, "In this case, if there is a deceleration lane, you must use that lane and reduce your speed while checking your speedometer rather than relying on your sense of speed." After high-speed driving, your sense of speed becomes dulled, so checking the speedometer is important.

  25. Q25On the main lane of an expressway, when a vehicle equipped with a structure and equipment for towing is towing another vehicle, it must always travel in the leftmost traffic lane, except near exits.[True / False · Medium]

    Answer: ✓ True

Explanation: On the main lane of an expressway, when a vehicle equipped with a structure and equipment for towing is towing a vehicle equipped with a structure and equipment to be towed, it is required to travel in the leftmost traffic lane. However, this does not apply when moving in advance to a traffic lane connecting to an exit. This is specified in the Rules of the Road, Chapter 7, Section 2, Driving Precautions.
