You passed — congratulations! Here’s what happens right after: when you get the card, what kind of license it is, and the one date you should never forget.

- You get your license the same dayOnce you pass the practical test, your Japanese driver's license is normally issued at the center that same day.
- It's a full Japanese licenseAfter conversion you hold an ordinary Japanese driver's license — the same as a license obtained through a driving school.
- Licenses expire — you renew themJapanese licenses have an expiry date printed on the card and are renewed on a set cycle. Renew before the date to keep driving.
- Carry it when you driveYou must carry your license while driving. Driving on an expired license or without it carries penalties.
- Your IDP no longer appliesOnce you hold a Japanese license, drive on that — your International Driving Permit is no longer the basis for driving here.

When do I receive my Japanese license after passing?
Normally on the same day you pass the practical driving test — the license center issues your Japanese driver's license right there once all steps are complete.
Is a converted license a full Japanese license?
Yes. After gaimen kirikae you hold an ordinary Japanese driver's license, the same as one obtained by going through a Japanese driving school. There's no separate 'converted' status on it.
Does my Japanese license expire?
Yes. Japanese licenses have an expiry date and are renewed on a set cycle (shown on the card). Renew before the printed date — driving on an expired license carries penalties. Watch your renewal window.
