How to Get a Japanese License
Intensive License Camp
Packing List
Once you've booked your camp, it's time to pack. Forgetting essential items can prevent enrollment or testing. Start with the must-haves, then add comfort gear to make shared rooms and long stays more pleasant.

✅ Absolutely Essential (enrollment/testing will be affected if missing)
ID document
Driver's license (if you have one), My Number card, passport, etc.
Residence certificate (issued within 3 months)
Must show registered domicile, no My Number. Follow school instructions if specified.
Seal (registered inkan)
Self-inking stamps (Shachihata) often not accepted—bring an inkan used with ink paste.
Health insurance card
Original only (copies not accepted). Needed for medical visits if you get sick.
Cash & credit card
Tuition is usually prepaid, but bring cash for living expenses and emergencies.
Glasses or contacts
Essential if you need them for the vision test and driving. Bring a spare if possible.
🎒 Good to Bring
Clothing (about 5 days' worth)
Easy-to-move-in clothes. With laundry, 5 days' worth is enough even for long stays.
Shoes for driving (sneakers)
A common pitfall. Sandals, high heels, platform shoes, and boots interfere with pedal operation and are often not allowed for lessons. Always bring at least one pair of sneakers or athletic shoes with a heel. Avoid showing up in fashionable shoes and being unable to drive.
Towels & toiletries
Check if the facility provides them. If not, bring toothbrush, shampoo, etc.
Laundry supplies
Detergent and laundry bag. Most accommodations have coin laundry.
Sunscreen & regular medication
Driving lessons are outdoors. Don't forget any medication you normally take.
Folding umbrella & phone charger
Rain gear is useful when traveling for shuttle rides or errands.
FAQ
How much cash should I bring to camp?
Most tuition is paid in advance, so you'll need cash for meals, daily essentials, and social expenses. Budget around ¥20,000–30,000 for two weeks, plus a reserve. Use cards or e-money alongside cash for safety.
What kind of seal do I need?
Enrollment usually requires a registered seal (inkan) used with ink paste. Self-inking stamps (Shachihata) are often not accepted, so bring a proper inkan. You won't need your official seal (jitsuin) or bank seal.
What residence certificate should I prepare?
Bring a residence certificate (juminhyo) that includes your registered domicile, does not show your My Number (individual number), and was issued within the past 3 months. Follow any specific format requested by the driving school.
What shoes should I bring? Are sandals okay?
Bring shoes that are easy to drive in (sneakers or athletic shoes with a heel). Sandals, high heels, platform shoes, and boots interfere with pedal operation and may not be allowed for lessons. Arriving in fashionable shoes and being unable to drive is a common mistake. Pack at least one pair of proper driving shoes.
Do I need to bring toiletries and daily essentials?
Facilities vary—some provide towels, toothbrushes, hair dryers, and washing machines, others don't. Check what's included when you book to avoid packing unnecessary items. For shared rooms, earplugs and an eye mask help you sleep better.
Camps include the written test too. While packing, start your test prep early. MenkyoQuest offers Rules of the Road-based practice questions in past-test format, free by chapter.
