LANGUAGE SUPPORT

Knowledge confirmation test is offered in 21 languages (日本語, English, Spanish, Persian, Korean, Chinese, Portuguese, Russian, Thai, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Khmer, Nepali, Burmese, Mongolian, Ukrainian, Sinhala, Urdu, Arabic, Hindi). The prefecture does NOT provide interpreters — applicants who cannot speak Japanese must bring their own interpreter for the document review/interview (日本語が話せない方は通訳人を同伴してください).

FEES

Test fees by license type: moped ¥1,600; standard (ordinary) ¥2,500; motorcycle/special ¥2,800; large/medium/semi-medium ¥3,900. Issuance fee: license only ¥2,350; My Number license only ¥1,550; both ¥2,450.

LOCAL NOTES

Conversion is a fully appointment-based (完全予約制) two-step process: first a document-screening/interview appointment (Mon–Thu), then a separate knowledge/skill-confirmation appointment (Mon–Fri). At the initial review a reference number is issued (※初回審査時に受付番号を通知します) which must be given when booking the test, and multiple test dates cannot be reserved at the same time (複数の受験日を、同時に予約することはできません). Citizens of 29 designated countries/regions (e.g. Australia, Canada, Germany, France, Taiwan) PLUS 8 specific US states (Ohio, Oregon, Virginia, Hawaii, Maryland, Washington, Indiana, Colorado) are exempt from the knowledge and skill tests.
